Although the trend is definitely towards wireless networks, mainly because they are often more convenient for users, wired networks can be superior when it comes to issues such as network security and faster upload/download speeds.

Increasingly, the needs of a modern home and many workspaces are for greater and more versatile internet coverage than just having a single PC, or group of PCs wired up to a router with ethernet cables.

Your computer network is critical to your business. It keeps your applications and internet service connected to your computer systems. Without it, the communication of data between computers would not happen, which could impede normal business operation. There are two main types of networks: wired and wireless. There is however an ongoing debate as whether businesses should deliver their LANs via a wired, or an unwired connection.

Advantages of a Wireless Network over Wired

·        Enabling BYOD: I mentioned in the introduction, the main advantage of a wireless network over a wired one is that users can move around freely within the area of the network with their laptops, handheld devices etc. and get access to  internet connection.

  • Users are also able to share files and other resources with other devices that are connected to the network without having to be cabled to a port.

  • Not having to lay lots of cables and put them through walls etc. can be a considerable advantage in terms of time and expense. It also makes it easier to add extra devices to the network, as no new cabling is needed.

·        Public Wi-Fi – Hotspots: Wireless networking has also gone into the public domain, with Wi-Fi hotspots being available in many high street coffee shops, hotels, railway stations, airports, universities, hospitals, etc. It enables people to get onto the Internet when they’re away from the office, or away from home. People can pick up their emails, both social and business, and if their place of work allows, can also connect into the business network remotely.

  • If you are a business such as a café, having a wireless network that is accessible to customers can bring you extra business. Customers generally love wireless networks because they are convenient.

  • Wireless networks can sometimes handle a larger amount of users because they are not limited by a specific number of connection ports.

  • Instant transfer of information to social media is made much easier. For instance, taking a photograph and uploading it to Facebook can generally be done much quicker with wireless technology..

Wireless Networks Work With Multiple Devices: Whether your device of choice is a laptop, phone or tablet, you can connect to the network with a simple click. This is convenient for visiting partners or clients, as well as employees who need to accomplish different tasks throughout the day, such as taking notes or checking email in between meetings
